NSS

What is it?

NSS stands for the National Service Scheme. It is a voluntary public service programme launched in 1969 by the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, with the primary aim of developing the personality and character of students through community service. The NSS encourages social welfare activities and aims to instill a sense of social responsibility, empathy, and leadership among young people. It operates through educational institutions such as schools and colleges, where students can volunteer their time to participate in various community development activities, including environmental conservation, literacy campaigns, health awareness programs, and disaster management initiatives. The NSS has a significant presence across the country and plays a vital role in fostering civic engagement and national development.

Motto:

The motto of the National Service Scheme (NSS) is “Not Me But You.” This motto reflects the essence of democratic living and emphasises the importance of selfless service, empathy, and consideration for others. It underscores the idea that individual welfare is interconnected with the welfare of society as a whole, encouraging NSS volunteers to prioritise community needs over personal interests.

Birsa Munda College NSS Unit:

Birsa Munda College NSS Unit:At Birsa Munda College, a firm commitment to community service and social responsibility shines through the National Service Scheme (NSS) activities. Students at Birsa Munda College are encouraged to join in its mission to effect meaningful change within the community and nurture a culture of service and compassion. The NSS initiatives offer students invaluable opportunities for societal engagement and personal development, echoing the motto “Not Me But You”. Operating year-round, the NSS Unit conducts various activities, including free health check-ups and awareness camps. Through these endeavours, students refine leadership skills, foster empathy, and contribute positively to society. Participation in diverse NSS extension activities within and beyond the college campus provides students with the platform to evolve into socially responsible individuals. Additionally, this hands-on engagement fosters experiential learning in human values and professional ethics. The college’s NSS committee actively organises gender sensitisation programmes and awareness camps throughout the year, addressing pressing issues such as human trafficking, domestic violence, and women’s health. With reverence for India’s spiritual and cultural heritage, emphasis is placed on yoga, with the NSS unit having already organised numerous yoga camps for college students.
